A different kind of Wedding. No Church. No Priest. No Worries!
/As a photographer with a traditional Roman Catholic upbringing, I found myself many times having the advantage with clients who had traditional ceremonies with a basic list of specific rituals or traditional set pieces such as walking down the isle, a eulogy, prayers and offerings and blessings. As a wedding photographer the ceremony has specific milestones that one could prepare for and then move and repeat until the wedding was over.
In a less formal or non traditional setting you may find your self having to either adapt to ones beliefs, the way they set up their wedding or flat out ditch what you know and capture everything on the fly.
Pro's - If you have a less formal wedding, with no private venue, priest (officiator) this is a great opportunity for you to set out of your comfort level and learn how to adapt to a different point of view. You should find yourself excited and nervous. Having a second shooter is a great way to make sure you have some back up photos. Also, prepare with a private meeting and questionnaire to help you think of any photos ops the non-traditional wedding may have. That way you can limit the surprises. But always remember - ADAPT!
Con's - A non-trbadititinal wedding can be spontaneous, nerve-racking and also cumbersome. But as long as in your contract you protect yourself from liability due to the circumstances, and the client is aware that you are doing your best, have no fear. Come well equips, but natural light and some pre-determined poses with a bit of creativity and planned private session after the wedding will give you great opportunities for some fantastic images. Most importantly, have fun with your clients and lead them on an adventure they will remember you always for!
Good Luck!
